You can select a rectangular area of text (rather than a line-based series
of characters) in Word. To see what I mean, hold down Alt and drag
diagonally across the middle of some text.
Rectangular selections are extremely useful in specific situations (such as
if you're working with hanging indents, or with columns of text created
using tabs).
For example, suppose you're editing some steps written by someone else where
the step numbers have been typed manually, and the body of each step is
indented on a hanging indent. To quickly get rid of the manual step numbers,
hold down Alt and drag to select only them, then press Delete (or choose
Cut).
Voila!
By the way, thanks to the various people who've posted tips.
Regards,
Craig
