atw: Word Tip: Breaking a table across a page without losing the heading line repeat.

Problem: If I manually split my table to make the rows break across
pages, I lose my heading rows repeat and, if I adjust the columns,
their spacing gets out of synch with the separated section of the table.

<<Semi-Automated Solution>>

First off, the table properties should be set to disallow rows to break
across pages and the rows should not be so deep with text or graphics
as to make this impractical.
Using the Word 9 (aka 2000) menus:
Table > Select Table
Table > Table Properties...
(Table Properties dialog displays.)
Click the Row tab.
In the Options pane, deselect Allow row to break across pages.
(You might have to click this more than once if it is greyed, as this
indicates different uses of this setting on individual rows within
the table.)
Either press Enter or click OK.

(This can fix a lot of your table over page break woes automatically,
without proceeding to making a manual break.)

Now press Home or End, whichever is closer to where you want the
table to break across a page.
(Takes you to the first or last cell of the table, respectively.)

<<Sort of Manual Solution>>

Go to the left hand column of the row where you want the table to split
across a page.
Format > Paragraph
(The Paragraph dialog displays.)
Click the Line and Page Breaks tab or press Ctrl+Tab.
(Ctrl+Tab moves left to right across window tabs.)
(Ctrl+Shift+Tab moves right to left across window tabs.)
Click to select Page break before.
Either press Enter or click OK.

I now use this all the time (also handy for shifting headings without
hard page breaks or changing a style) and it makes life so much easier
with neatening up lengthy tables.

HTH.
