atw: Word 2003 Watermark Issue

Has anyone come across a problem with a Word 2003 watermark remaining on
the first page of a document even though it should be turned off
(Format>Background>Printed Watermark)?
It is happening regularly to a client and I can't seem to get it to
disappear, but I haven't been able to replicate the problem on my own
machine.
Any suggestions?
