Good morning.
Last night, I asked Word 10 / AKA 2002 to do a File >
Print Preview on a document containing mainly table cells.
The Word window went blank for a almost a minute, showed
the print preview, then vanished as I hit the Escape key
to return to the document, just before I could manually
close the application.
The doc file was saved beforehand and does not appear to
be corrupted in any way (when I was able to check it in
the Word Safe Mode, which Word offered to run for me.
To manually open Word in Safe Mode hold down the Ctrl key
while double-clicking on the Word icon, see:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291013> for more.
My problem appears to be that, like every night, I cleaned
up my XP PC using the XP disk cleanup tool (type cleanmgr
at the Run prompt) and it deleted the temporary files that
Word needed to "recover" files when it starts up. So Word
was looking for what it left behind when it crashed, so as
to do automated recovery process and will not start with
its plugins enabled (in anything other than its Safe Mode)
as a result of being unable to find those files.
I would imagine that fixing this, so that Word will open
normally again, comes down to some entry in a Windows
Registry key and wondered if anyone know how to get Word's
brain out of neutral so that it will work again.
If so, please let me know ASAP and I shall just run Word
in its Safe Mode in the meantime.
(If it turns out that any document files are actually
corrupted, I have a ZIP backup from a three hours
beforehand and one from the night before, saved to another
folder on my C: drive, from where I run everything as our
network was very low on space until yesterday, and on the
network drive for our project.)
For anyone else having problems opening word, see the very
handy page @
<http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
Thanks in anticipation of any help you can provide with
the above.
Sincerely,
Michael Granat
