The following tips work in IE and Firefox (unless
otherwise stated).
To return to a site whose address is still in your
browser's History list (which persists for a set
number of days), you can type just the first few
characters of the URL without the "http://" or "www."
parts.
For instance, to return to Google:
- click in the Address bar (or press Alt+D)
- type "goo" (without quotes)
(after a moment, a list of matching URLs drops down)
- press the Down key to highlight the URL you want
- press Enter to go to the site.
You can change the number of days for which the
History list persists. [Don't try saying that when
you're pi**ed!] In IE choose Tools > Internet Options
and look on the General tab. (It can be up to 999
days.) In Firefox, choose Tools > Options and look in
the Privacy section. (It can be up to an absurdly big
number!)
Also, regardless of the History list, to go to a
".com" address (not ".com.au"), you can type just the
central part. For instance, to go to
www.microsoft.com, in the Address bar type "microsoft"
(without quotes) and press Ctrl+Enter. (Firefox has
additional shortcuts for ".net" and ".org" addresses.
For details, see the rows near the top of the table
at:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/keyboard)
Firefox only: As you may know, Firefox has a tabbed
window so you can open several Web pages at once.
(It's similar to the window in Excel and other
spreadsheets, except that Firefox's tabs are at the
top.) I recently found that you can hold down Ctrl and
click the Back button (or Forward) to open the
resulting page in a new tab. For instance, that's
handy if you just click a link when you meant to
Ctrl+click it to open it in a new tab -- Ctrl+click on
the Back button opens the page (which you just left)
in a new tab!
Hope that helps,
Craig
