One of the jobs I do here is translate user requirements into high level 
specs. One of the major inclusions are all the various conditions that 
must generate error messages and warnings...so a while ago  I wrote:

Condition:  A steering controller and visual display device have not been 
detected on the CAN bus.
Response: The system must display a DTC error message.

As was just pointed out to me, it's pretty hard to display an error 
message if you don't have a terminal........yeah go ahead and laugh!
