First of all, thank you to everyone who has already completed the form I
announced on this list last week. I'm very pleased with the response - at
last count there were 62 forms submitted. However, that doesn't mean that
I'm not still accepting more submissions - far from it! The more responses
I get the better chance I have of getting a good picture of what skills
are involved in our enterprise of technical writing/communication.
If you haven't filled in the form and would like to, please visit
http://members.iinet.net.au/~howard.silcock/skillsform.html. (If you
don't know what I'm talking about, I described the background to the form
last week in a post to this list, which you can read at
http://www.freelists.org/archives/austechwriter/09-2007/msg00014.html.)
I'd also like to request that you continue to mention the form to others
involved in technical communication, if you feel it's a venture you want
to support.
People from Tasmania will be glad to learn that I've included their state
in the drop-down box from which I'd accidentally omitted it before. I
decided, however, not to add a field where respondents can specify how
long they've been tech writers - not because I don't think it's a good
idea (I did originally mean to have it there), but because I'd already had
so many responses by the time it was pointed out to me that it was
missing. Another minor error, deriving from a typo on my part, led to the
responses to the field relating to WordPerfect being dropped out, so I
won't be able to see how many people still use this product! But as far as
I can see those are the only design problems so far.
I haven't had a chance to do much analysing of the responses yet, but
appreciate the supportive messages I received from many of you. I was
interested that about 38% of the responses identified themselves as from
New Zealand (or, in one case, Aotearoa) - you guys must be an active lot!
