Hello Syed. Most tech writing jobs are in the bigger cities. The number
of opportunities tends to be driven by the local economy. For example,
the oil, gas and mining sector is doing well here in WA at the moment so
there are more TW jobs advertised in those areas. Other states
specialise more or less on IT, defence, government, and so on. My
impression is that there is a reasonable amount of TW work around at the
moment, especially compared with a couple of years ago the market was
very tight.
Nearly all the jobs I see advertised require you to be an Australian
citizen or to have a visa that entitles you to work here. I think it
would be rare for an employer to sponsor someone to come from another
country, because it would take a lot of time and paperwork. Usually when
an employer decides they want a TW, they want them to start straight
away. The exception might be if they urgently needed someone with
specialist skills or experience that is in very short supply.
Many job ads only ask for a minimum of 2-3 years experience, so if you
have 4 years experience as a TW that should be more than enough. I'm
afraid your Masters probably won't help much. If an employer specifies a
qualification it would usually be something like IT, engineering,
commerce or science.
It would help if you could show work samples and demonstrate that it
really is your own work.
So to sum up, there are opportunities around but realistically you would
need to be here and already be entitled to work here at the time you
approach recruiting agencies or apply for an advertised job.
Regards
Stuart
