Bruce Ashley said,
>>As for the STC, I was against the Australian chapter being set up because we
had never seriously tried to merge the ASTCs and running off to Uncle Sam
was, to me, seen as a cop out. Clearly the needs of some were not being met
but the solution should be local, not imported, regardless of how 'local'
you try to make the imported one look. <<
The Australia Chapter was set up to serve the needs of a bunch of people who
were ALREADY members of the STC, and would probably have happened even if there
had been a national ASTC. New Zealand has both a home-grown organisation
(TCANZ)
and an STC chapter, you might note.
Michael Granat mentions the cost of STC membership as a deterrent for
Australians to join (a good point), but then adds,
>>Plus the fact that the money goes out of Australia, much of which we get
back as "food aid" for our poor little Third World chapter.<<
But before we had a chapter, NONE of the money from STC members in Australia
came back to Australia. With a chapter, at least we do get SOME back.
