Thanks, everyone
I can't rule out the possibility that I've done what Elizabeth suggested
and introduced extra text or newlines inside the bookmark every time
I've had this problem, but I must have done so very unconsciously. In
the case I'm currently working on, that would mean I'd have somehow
unconsciously expanded a one-line referenced text heading so that it now
includes 65 newline symbols and 6 numbered page-width figures! Stuart's
suggestion of using the Lock switch looks promising. I'd much prefer to
find a solution that makes Word do the work rather than placing an extra
burden of checking on myself - or even forcing me to have field shading
or Show Non-printing Characters (or whatever it's called) on when I
don't want to!
I've been attempting to create a macro that looks for newlines in
cross-reference bookmarks. However, VBA's Bookmarks collection doesn't
recognise the "_Ref" bookmarks that Word creates when defining
cross-refs and there's no CrossReferences collection or anything
similar.
Howard
