This turned out to be a very timely reminder, Bede. I tried some time ago to
get my area to buy a copy of the Style Manual, but without success. However,
after reading Bede's post I decided to try again and, as we're approaching
the end of the financial year and have money left over, I was told I could
order whatever books I need (within reason, I suppose).

So I'll get the Style Manual and the Macquarie Dictionary (because it's the
official standard, not because it's my favourite), a thesaurus and the new
Fowler's Modern English Usage. Would anyone like to recommend other
reference books that they find helpful? I'll probably also look for a
dictionary of IT terminology, though I don't have a specific one in mind. (I
think we've had this discussion before on this list, but I'm sure a reprise
won't hurt.)
