I'm not entirely sure where this thread starts or ends, nonetheless, just
wanted to throw in a quick warning: Canberra would NOT be a good place to
start!
They've taken to holding auctions for rental properties in Canberra. In
other words, for anyone moving to Canberra, getting there and getting a job
are likely to be easier to achieve than finding and affording somewhere to
live. Quite extraordinary situation really, as Canberra housing, back in
the day, was quite affordable and plenty of good stock. Now, not so much.
Also, the Federal gov't has just embarked on cutting thousands of jobs.
While some Federal offices are scattered across the states and territories,
most agencies are Canberra based, with their largest workforce being in
Canberra.
So, if you want to live on a park bench and compete with a few thousand
former public servants for a job, but all means look to Canberra.
With a total population still hovering around the low 300,000 mark, even the
loss of a few hundred jobs at any one time in Canberra can create a "glut"
of job seekers.
Why not Perth? They're begging for skilled people, the weather if fabulous
and they're throwing money at anyone who turns up.
I would seriously head to Perth if not for my obligations here. Truly. I
would leap at the opportunities over there; would have packed my bags and
gone a couple of years ago. Still worth going, the boom is not over yet.
FWIW.
