I have plans in migrating to Australia ... so in that regards, can you
please answer few questions:
1. Tools which the Aussie companies look forward while hiring a
technical writer?
MS Office (mainly Word and Visio)
Framemaker
Help Authoring Tools--RoboHelp, AuthorIT, Flare
2. I have about 2 yrs of experience as a technical writer in IT field;
is there a lot of job opportunities prevailing?
Two years experience is adequate as long as you were doing a
range of useful and applicable tasks.
3. What would be the salary package for my experience?
Depends on the location, industry, contract versus permanent,
state of the economy...
There was a salary survey whose results were reported on this list
a few months ago--you should be able to find it in the archives.
4. What kind of degree much preferable while hiring a technical writer?
Technical Communication degree (very rare in Australia);
Computer Science, Science, Engineering, Commerce
Arts/Humanities with an emphasis on language or writing
You're right to say that a degree might be preferred by
particular employers but there wouldn't usually be a firm
requirement. (BTW I have a Bachelor of Business with a major
in Information Processing)
5. How is the TW job at Aussie?
Lots of work in Western Australia at the moment, not too bad
in other states I believe. Again, this question comes up quite
often so you should get a good feel by scanning the archives
for the last few months.
