atw: Re: - on being pedantic [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

In terms of what? Well, we can classify pedantry in terms of degree, in
terms of subject matter, in terms of intention, or in terms of
qualification to hold an opinion. Each of these classifications can be
refined in terms of grammar, spelling, clarity or technical accuracy.
Further analysis would no doubt reveal other levels of classification.

However, when I use the word pedant, I generally mean someone who's
fussier than me.

When you mean pedantic, what do you mean pedantic in terms of?

thank goodness it is Thursday.

Hmm, it looks interesting from the website (and it's in Cairns too!).
But, at the risk of being branded an incorrigible pedant (who, me?), I
have to report that I found myself wondering as I read the description
there: can 'best-practise online documentation and Web content'
encompass worst-practice spelling? ('practise' is a verb)

Sorry, Penny, I couldn't resist the comment. But I will resist
stereotyping anyone in Victoria (where the conference seems to derive
from).

Maybe we should declare Thursday to be pedants' day on austechwriter ...
then we could have a pedant-free zone the rest of the week.

Howard

Dear Tech Writers

Just a reminder that the annual AODC Conference is being held in Cairns
from 3rd to 5th May.

As well as the usual array of pertinent and informative sessions, there
will be much discussion and debate on the implications of Microsoft's
decision to restrict Vista Help to its own applications. There are also
some excellent sessions on emerging approaches to documentation, such as
structured authoring, wikis and DITA. The new MadCap Flare tool will be
demonstrated for the first time in Australia.

Further information and registration at http://www.aodc.com.au.
