Not sure if this is physics, sophistry of something else, but let's 
try anyway...

I tend to agree with you Brian re Snopes. I would like to see a lot 
reference to the material they base their conclusions on.

However, [what follows is purely anecdotal, is not based on any 
serious research and my personal opinion but...] I looked at Snopes 
for several issues a couple of years ago. I can't remember any 
details now, but in each case where I was able to independently check 
their conclusions, they were correct. I remember this was 
particularly correct when I checked a few of those virus warnings you 
get. [Of course virus warnings would be one of the easiest things to 
check independently.]

I would say take Snopes with a grain of salt, and certainly look for 
independent collaboration, but their views are not bad for a first 
opionion.
