atw: Re: mobile phone service

I'm with Virgin for mobile - the plan is good for my usage pattern
(either very short "where are you" calls to friends or text messages),
but exorbitant if i need to make calls of over a minute or so (if i
stray from my usage pattern...). but when you try global roaming:

- how much will it cost me to use my phone in NZ?
- i can't tell you
- why not?
- because we don't have a partner company in NZ
- but you are owned by Optus, I bet Optus has a partner company in NZ
- <some rubbish about that not counting>
- well, i really just need a ball-park figure for what calls and txt
will cost me
- <more rubbish about the figures being out of date and not wanting to
give me any information about anything>
- end result - if someone in Australia sends me a txt in NZ, it will
cost me 95c

conclusion: when i really need global roaming, i will change
companies...

I would say that whatever you do , don't ever sign up with
Three. They are the worst of them all (and I've had all of them). Phones
are pure garbage , hardly any service anywhere..and I've heard this from
lots of people. Also, avoid the new Motorola video phones..
I liked Optus..shouldn't have left them..coverage was the best
with them and Telstra.

I suggest Virgin Mobile for mobile. (Even though it's 100% owned
by Optus)
For reliable service broadband and VOIP try IINET
www.iinet.net.au . Their iphone service is chucked in with ADSL+
broadband.

unconfusing access to what you need.........................

Maybe that stops when they get too big too fast

I feel that Virgin is about low cost, games, silly
preening and not about convenience

Just wondering if there are any other strong players out
there?

I do keep a Telstra prepay card for traveling in areas
of low coverage but I don't need it much.

Learn to get angry with them when things go wrong. It is
the only way to jump them.
