That's right.
Two good friends of mine work high up in Telstra and in Bigpond (at the top
of the accounts systems). Both independently told me about how John Howard's
bully bouys (not smart enough to be human) stopped the roll-out of the
optical cable network in order to make the value of the company higher
during the sale. The stupidity of the cynical decision they made is borne
out by the fact that some so-called third world countries are now better
served in remote areas by cable services than we are.

Telstra decided that the best way to go was adsl as an interim, and develop
3g technology. What is coming is or will be as good as cable. But that will
take time.

SO, yes, we are at the crank handle stage, AND THAT IS FIRMLY IN THE HANDS
OF THE FASCIST GOVT IN CANBERRA.

Warren.

A big call. I think you will find wireless does not have the bandwidth to
fully replace an optical fibre backbone. 3G is fast now because the road is
fairly clear but I am interested to see what happens as traffic builds up.
Australia has needed an optical backbone from 5 years ago. Sadly, in
broadband terms, we are pretty much at the hand-cranked party line stage.
