hi everyone,
Regards Steve.
Steve is in a position where he needs to find regular, consistent income,
something he has been unable to do for some time in technical writing. I am
in a similar situation, I need a permanent role. Steve, and his wife, are
needing income for the usual husband and wife reasons. He has started work
in the IT industry but totally unrelated to writing. Management! Of all
things. I know Steve well, and he has always had the best interests and
regards for all of us in the fraternity, even the ones who bad mouth him!
Steve was fed up with the difficulty associated with making a living as a
freelance tech writer and doing work then waiting for months before being
paid. He was fed up with providers saying they were going to give him work,
then doing it all in a rush because they were so disorganised, and forcing
him to do impossible turn-arounds in order to get the work back to them.
I hope he has found a niche that suits him and will let his myriad skills
shine. Sadly, I think it is us who have lost out in many ways.
Warren.
PS: For what its worth: Merry Christmas.
Bah. Humbug.

Your time will come.
If you had bothered to re-read his mail you would see that the computer
failure was just the trigger for the meltdown, not the cause. Go back over
it and see if you can work out what the problem really was. It was quite
clear to me and a few other "oldies" - that point at which we realise that
our superhuman effort has all been in vain.

Personally I am afraid I had difficulty sympathising with Steve's recent
meltdown.
I fail to understand how anyone could not have acquired a decent operational
PC and lasted for 15 years as a technical writer.
Yes hardware can fail, but if you don't buy bleeding edge hardware you can
go for redundancy and buld yourself two close to current technology PCs for
the price of one. At today's prices you can get a pair of very good
pre-dual processor desktops or one very decent dual processor laptop for
around $1400. With two sets of identical hardware you can just swap over
the hard drive if anything goes wrong on your main desktop and you are
straight back to work.
Or you get yourself a name brand laptop with a gold service warranty and
they come out and fix any problem at your desk within hours.
Three computers might be excessive but I have been caught out with hardware
problems once or twice myself and I have both the good laptop and the pair
of dodgy desktops, which gives me reliability, redundancy and mobility.
Its really not rocket science.
Enough said!
