It's my understanding that most graphic formats are translated into an internal format during PDF production, so the end result depends more on what the compression settings and other graphics setting are than on the initial graphic format. I belive EPS graphics are passed through the PDF process without any changes, and 1 other format is similarly handled (unfortunately I can't remember which one!). A lot of contributors to Acrobat/Framemaker/PDF forums swear by TIFF files. So maybe try the Framers or one of the Adobe forums for more details?
