Exactly, Caz, and thanks for your contribution. I received a couple
off-line as well.
It seems it is all hit and miss, and at the end of the day I have ended up
quoting pretty standard TW industry contract rates, ranging from $50.00 to
$100 per hour depending on the nature of the work.

Christine

Which might be useful Hedley, if the role was as a book editor and if any
gov't department in the country had a clue what book editors are or should
be paid. Having worked for years in federal (in Canberra) and some fewer
years in state government, departments have a budget, they have work to be
done, and they pay as little as possible, without reference to rates that
might apply anywhere else. They do, however, pay contractors a little more
than perm staff.

Try the Societies of Editors websites and mailing lists for someone who
could tell you how few peanuts book editors are paid.
