I remember the good old days of WordPerfect for DOS. And the numbering
was a joy, even in the Windows interface...
And that viewing codes mode was great - gave me a good head-start with
HTML when that came along.=20

I used WordPerfect many years back - about 13 years - as a DOS version.
It=20
worked well, but had a few bugs, and using Ctrl+ALT + shift + something=20
drove me mad.
Numbering of lists and paragraphs worked beautifully, as did automatic=20
indenting.
The great feature was ??? mode (I forget the name). This allowed you to
see the codes, tags and mechanics of the mark-up. Rather like seeing
the=20
raw HTML code behind the WYSIWYG version. And you could have a split=20
screen, with the WYSIWYG at the top and the tags below. So easy to find
a=20
tag that started in the wrong place.
Then they moved to Windows. I reckon that the programmers did not
really=20
understand the windows platform. This resulted in a clumsy interface.
Since then I haven't used it.

If I had my druthers, I'd stop Word development at Word 97 and set the
developers to spend the rest of their lives fixing bugs. This NSW
goverment department still runs on Word 97, although I'm stuck with a
rogue 2002 machine. I have Word 97 at home and I guard it jealously.
=20
The reality of life is that Microsoft does its best to remove
everything but the latest version from the market, so you might find
that Word 2002 is the oldest Word you can get.
=20
At a Westies meeting I heard Warren Lewington speak well of
WordPerfect. Maybe the time has come to promote a switch from a
soul-destroying Word to a replacement (No Frame wars, please).=20
=20
Is WordPerfect a workable, realistic, liveable replacement for Word in
professional TW practice?
