I think not, because you have no density control.  If a 1 mm thickness of
lint blocks the light completely, a 2 mm thickness will show no difference
on your test.

I think the only fair test is to dry it and weigh it.  Even then, it's not
very fair because of the differencies in the densities of various fabrics.
Compare wool vs cotton vs polyester, for example.
