atw: Re: "basis [was "nit-picking and steering back on track (a bit)"]

What about "basis points"? Where the hell did that come from? We no longer have "a quarter of a per cent" - we have to suffer "25 basis points". Is it because 25 is bigger than a quarter of one?

Gimme a break....

One of my many pet hates:

"basis" as in "on a daily basis", e.g. "The newsagent delivers /The Age/ on a daily basis." instead of "The newsagent delivers /The Age/ daily."

Look for combinations with other periods of time (monthly, etc.) and other phrases: "competes on an amateur basis" instead of "competes as an amateur", etc.

Now that I have sensitised you, prepare to go mad: the forces of darkness are on an ubiquitous basis.

I know! Let's start a thread and see if we can keep it going (a) longing than "mouses" and (b) with more posts! They who die with the most posts just die (no, not even win).
