Hi Petra,

If you use SNAG-IT to take your screen dumps and paste them into Word as
Device Independent Bitmap it will take on the same compression that you
get from a Windows Metafile Format file. I have done the experimenting
and it works.. The bitmap file on its own.. was 607KB, then I used
Snag-It to snapshot it and then Edit Paste Special and the file size
came to 219KB
When I did it your way using the Word WMF option ... It came to 217kb...
same same but quicker..

Snag IT is quick easy, and worth the money..

Thank you Petra.
I tried your suggestion but it has made almost no difference to the
document
file size. I saved the file both before and after but there was no
reduction.

I know when I go through the document line by line and Copy Paste
Special Picture (Windows Metafile) every screen or button graphic, a
1,900KB file reduces to 300MB or so. If I miss even 1 graphic, the file
size
does not reduce. It is slow and labourious and it's doing my head in. I
hoped a macro could speed things up. Perhaps someone else can come up
with a
solution.

Thanks again.

Hi Helen,

I don't know how to do a macro to change the picture type but perhaps
this
could help.

* In the Picture toolbar (View/Toolbars/Picture) click the Compress icon
(it's to the left of the textwrapping icon which is a dog).

* Ensure All Pictures in Document is checked

* Ensure that the Compress pictures option is chosen - you may also want
to
choose the Crop option

* Click OK

If you really want to compress the pictures you can choose the Web
option
but this will significantly reduce the resolution.

Regards,

Petra

Subject: atw: Help with a WORD Macro - Please

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone help me please?

I am trying to reduce the size of a Word document that has lots of
screen
captures (User Ref and Training Manuals). It makes sense to change the
format of the pictures to Picture (Windows Metafile) as this does make a
significant difference to the file size. I have recorded a macro that
copies
a screen capture and uses Paste Special to paste it as a Picture
(Windows
Metafile) back on top of itself. The macro records OK but does not
actually
recognise the difference between pasting as a metafile or a bitmap. The
generated macro code is the same. The Word file size is not. The code is
as
follows:

Selection.Copy

    Selection.PasteAndFormat (wdPasteDefault)

Can anyone suggest how I can change the macro, as I have many of these
screen captures in 20+ manuals to deal with. I cannot see how we can get
the
formatting completed in the time we have left, if we do them one at a
time.

I am grateful for any suggestions

Thanks and regards

Dear austechies,

A NSW government body has an immediate vacancy for a technical writer,
preferably one with an engineering background (and even better with a
transport engineering background). The job is to edit and compile
reports
(such as project overview reports and option comparison reports). The
audience for these reports is mostly other government agencies.

You should have very good MS Word skills, a commitment to work quickly
and
within tight deadlines, and excellent writing skills. (the client has
particularly emphasised the need for top-notch writing skills.)

The position is in an inner northern suburb of Sydney.

Call me to discuss the position further, or send me your CV ASAP.

Cheers
