I rewrote sections of documents that I had written for various
employers over the years and put them in a portfolio. Then I talked my
way into rewriting a 20-page manual for a smallish firm, for a tiny fee.
I contributed a section to another manual, also very cheaply. Then,
portfolio in hand, I went on a job hunt.
After only three years of preparation and six months of intensive
hunting I found myself a real job. And I loved it.
