atw: Re: advice for student technical writer

Also consultancies are a good place to start. They often recruit
juniors because they are cheap - and the training you would get from
them would certainly be fast track. You will be given as much to do as
you are capable of, then a bit more. After a year or two you could
branch out on your own. =20

Some snags - you must look like a consultant with all that entails (ie
'cultural fit' stuff), and you must sweat blood.

Hello techwriters
I'm hoping you guys can help out a poor student technical writer (a.k.a.
me,
Erica Game) with some of your expert advice.=20
I'm currently completing a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing
at
the Gordon TAFE, Geelong. In a previous incarnation I attained a B.Sc
(Biochem), Dip. App. Sc.( Med. Lab. Tech) and spent some 20+ years
working
as a hospital scientist.
I'd be really grateful if you could share some of your experiences and
advice in getting that all important first technical writing job. How
did
you break into the profession?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated
Cheers
Erica Game
