This used to mean the cheque was invalid, as others have suggested. But I 
recall that the rules were changed a few years ago to say that if the two 
amounts differed the amount in figures would stand. That means there's 
absolutely no point in writing the amount in words anyway. It's possible that 
the rules have changed back again, but I wouldn't count on it; I imagine that 
the decision was largely driven by the increasing use of OCR, which works on 
figures better than on handwritten words.
