The cheque is invalid and will not be accepted until the amounts match (and the 
funds are available:)).

Also, I never want to get on your bad side ... after all this time, you still 
won't let go of the Blackberry devices issue. :D

Thanks to all for your responses. I might have known it was the *lawyers* 
behind this weird behaviour! As if it wasn't bad enough making us write 
'BlackBerry devices', when no-one in their right mind would call them that in 
everyday speech.

Does anyone know what happens if you write a cheque and put 'two thousand 
dollars' in words and $200 in figures? Can the payee assume you meant $2000?
