Hi Bruce
Yes, you're right - 'BlackBerry devices' still rankles for me. But I'm
working on some BlackBerry documentation now and being a good boy,
dutifully editing everything to avoid the lawyers' apoplexy. I hope that
others may eventually realise how ridiculous it all looks. (Not the
lawyers - they would never notice that.) The goal is to make everyone
fully aware of how people want to mangle our language, to avoid the
changes being slipped in subliminally. So readers will see 'BlackBerry
device' several times on each page.
Just as an example of how this approach works, I should now point out to
you that the correct spelling is BlackBerry, not Blackberry. In fact, to
be on the safe side, you should be writing BlackBerry® (that last
character was meant to be the registered trademark symbol, in case it
renders incorrectly for anyone).
And, turning to Michael G's comments, I think I can only say, adapting
Mark Twain's words, that his reports of the (near) death of the cheque are
greatly exaggerated. I received a cheque from my mother-in-law this
morning, as a birthday present (yes, it's my birthday ). I certainly
wouldn't want to wait for her to invest in "several grand of technology"
before getting my present. She doesn't even own a computer.

Hi Howard.
The cheque is invalid and will not be accepted until the amounts match
(and the funds are availableJ).
Also, I never want to get on your bad side … after all this time, you
still won’t let go of the Blackberry devices issue. :D
Cheers,
Bruce

Thanks to all for your responses. I might have known it was the *lawyers*
behind this weird behaviour! As if it wasn't bad enough making us write
'BlackBerry devices', when no-one in their right mind would call them that
in everyday speech.
Does anyone know what happens if you write a cheque and put 'two thousand
dollars' in words and $200 in figures? Can the payee assume you meant
$2000?
Howard
