Geoff,

Many if not most tech writers are also good knowledge managers or web devel=
opers. Broaden your scope and advertise that your language skills will enab=
le you to produce better reports or content than the person who is only spe=
cialised in the field in question.

Smaller organisations still have many of the same needs larger oranisations=
 do - but don't have enough work in any one area to warrant hiring a specia=
list. For example, at one stage in my career I was the one man band handlin=
g all customer facing documentation from correspondence to technical user m=
anuals for a small software house. Although some of what I did was "secreta=
rial" work, it kept me employed and I learned a lot about the businesses - =
both ours and our clients'.

You should also look at training or teaching possibilities.

Hi,

I'm moving from Brisbane to Launceston, following my wife, so I'm going to =
need=20
to find some work. Does anybody have any suggestions on looking for tech=
=20
writing work in a smaller city/economy?

I've found that the amount of work is a lot less, but that's not real=20
suprising. Neither is the lower pay scale.

Any suggestions will help, because as much as I like the idea of sitting in=
=20
front of the fire with a shiraz, I'm going to need to do something producti=
ve ;-
)

Cheers,

Geoff
