Well, I guess it depends what you mean by 'stable'. If you mean
that the list's not going to suddenly reformat or renumber itself,
then that's true enough.

I'm going to disagree Howard. And I'm not saying it's easy - but
you can have stable formatting and numbering in Microsoft Word.
1. Set up your numbered list styles as part of the heading outline
series.
The list will restart like clockwork when the higher level outline
style is used. And granted - this is not always feasible; but if
it works for your document to have your lists tied to your
headings - it will be stable.
2. DO NOT manually format your outline list - it will corrupt.
Define the paragraph styles, link them to your outline list levels
and do not change them. (A bit more difficult in 2007 but it can
be done).
3. DO NOT paste text, particularly automated list, heading or
bulleted text from other documents into your document - it will
corrupt the list. If you need to, use Paste Unformatted so that
the paragraph text comes in as unformatted text.
Rule 1 rarely works for the sorts of document templates I set up
and use on a regular basis. I set up an independent outline list
series and then I convert the list to text once I don't need the
autonumbering any more.
