I don't say this just to be a pain in the neck... I promise :)
This topic brings back all sorts of memories of swearing at the computer for hours on end. It reminds me of one reason that we switched to OpenOffice - numbered lists are easy-peasy.
Now, I know that many tech writers don't have a choice of software to use... and I know that OpenOffice is NOT for every situation (for some, Word is still the better choice)... BUT for some, it might pay to have a look at OpenOffice and see if it could meet your needs better than Word. If you have questions, give me a yell - I might take a while to answer, but I'll do my best.
