This was happening on one of my contracts. My co-worker assumed this was a
Word 'bug' and the workaround was to manually re-apply all styles. That is
what she actually did.
But I am guessing that Terry may have hit on a possible solution - dispensing
with normal anything, including referencing it as the base style of another
style. I had to do the latter when using 2003 on another contract, to stop
random style over-rides that seemed to make no sense.

Subject: atw: Word Happens: Normal font size
Hi All
Firstly, apologies in advance if any of this is incoherent - I am
completely stumped and a teensy bit frustrated.
I was out at a client site this morning and struck a weird thing in Word
2003.
I was setting up a nice new Normal.dot for the client to use and it worked
as it should when creating new documents.
However, when we applied the Normal.dot to existing documents (via Style
Gallery), the Normal font pt size will not apply to the existing Normal
style. The Normal style font type changes from TNR to Tahoma, but it stays
at 12 pt. When we check what pt size Normal style is (Style pane > Normal >
Modify), it is 10 pt! If we manually apply Normal style, the proper font
size is applied.
Also, in the Styles pane, when I select a style it says "Not currently
used" when it *is* in use so we can't just perform an easy Style Pane >
Select all instances update.
I blew away and re-created Normal.dot but since that didn't fix the
problem, it leads me to believe there is something odd going on with the
original docs. Any clues as to where I should be looking?
Cheers, Sam
