I use three primary methods for fixing graphics to a point in a page. None
of them relies on MS Word's so-called picture embedding functions.
1. Use tables. This creates brilliant notes and also layout alterations,
using column style look and feel in text for instance. Also good for laying
out groups of two or three or four pictures. In versions after 2002, make
sure you dedicate table styles to each type of note or layout you wish to
use, so warnings might be "Table Grid 1", while layout tables might be
"Table Grid 2" and so on. Autotext it and go buy more coffee. Does create
gnarly video card memory handling errors in large documents.
2. Use a paragraph style or two or three, which you use for every picture
you embed in a document. For say, Picture, Picture wide and so on. This also
helps standardise your picture sizes, so you can stipulate a width, or
height, or both, leading, spacing and margins. Bang on every time.
Perfection personified. Stroke your ego. You can link that style to your
caption style then. Autotext it with a caption field and you'll look like a
genius...
3. For notes with clipart or bespoke graphical connotations, like warnings
or whatever, use a character style. This is utilised to drop the text from
the standard line size to accommodate spacing or height of the graphic. If
the graphic is a larger size than the normal height of the text, then two
lines will show aggravating gaps. But the graphic and the note never leave
each other. A match made in the Word tunnel of love. Use that and you're
indispensible. ;-)
Don't bother using Word's inbuilt picture layout dialog. It never works
properly. Did I also mention never to use Word's inbuilt picture layout
tools? They never work.
Regards; Merry Christmas.

I often do this. Tables can blow out your file size, but providing file
size is not an issue, tables do make the graphic position stable.
There are lots of settings for floating graphics that are supposed to lock
the graphic to a set position, but I have never taken the time to be certain
what each does. Intuitive guesses on the fly sometimes work and sometimes
don't.
If anyone knows of good documentation that explains these settings and has
identified one that makes the graphic position 100% stable, I would love to
see it. I'll put it on my blog if we get a good explanation.

Subject: atw: Word - Better to insert graphics into single-cell tables?
Hi All,
I often find jumping-around type problems with graphics in Word. Using the
Confluence wiki where graphics really jump around and coping with it by
always putting graphics into single-cell tables in the wiki I thought I'd do
the same in Word. It seems to eliminate any problems but I wonder if anyone
has thoughts for or against for doing this.
Regards,
Petra
