Hello Petra and Christine,
I have no good documentation to suggest, but my experience with Word 2003
was equally frustrating: about the only way to keep graphic items where you
want is to lock the items down by insertion into table cells, or by using
"in line with text" (in relation to paragraph marks if no text present), or
by selecting two, three, four and more bits in proximity and
quick-before-they-jump-apart-like-coiled-springs, use the "group" function
to bind them together.
Word 2007 is a vast improvement. You can paste your images into a Word 2007
doc or "Insert" them. They arrive as "in line with text." Then, right click
on your image> Format AutoShape> Layout> In front of text> OK. Your image
turns into a floater, and stays where you put it! If you want overlapping
images, callouts, etc, then you still have to juggle the Send behind, Bring
to front, in front/behind text rigmarole, but even that seems to work
better, too.
While writing this, I'm thinking of how a moody recalcitrant adolescent can
one day transform into someone who doesn't mind lending a hand once in a
while, or at least refrain from getting in the road.
Take heart!
Happy holidays to all,
Stephen

I often do this. Tables can blow out your file size, but providing file
size is not an issue, tables do make the graphic position stable.
There are lots of settings for floating graphics that are supposed to lock
the graphic to a set position, but I have never taken the time to be certain
what each does. Intuitive guesses on the fly sometimes work and sometimes
don't.
If anyone knows of good documentation that explains these settings and has
identified one that makes the graphic position 100% stable, I would love to
see it. I'll put it on my blog if we get a good explanation.

Hi All,
I often find jumping-around type problems with graphics in Word. Using the
Confluence wiki where graphics really jump around and coping with it by
always putting graphics into single-cell tables in the wiki I thought I'd do
the same in Word. It seems to eliminate any problems but I wonder if anyone
has thoughts for or against for doing this.
Regards,
Petra
