Some of the problems introduced with the new features of 2002 have been
cleaned up somewhat. Arguably the most important feature (over 2002) is the
ability to lock down the author into only using the available styles. There
are some more addressable task panes (see the monster article I wrote below
for more info)
Disabling task panes to return to the old UI:

It is more stable. That's the best part.

Lots of corporates are still using Office 97. They've saved themselves
considerable bother by staying away from Word 2002, and probably saved
considerable expense as well. The fact that Microsoft doesn't support
97 doesn't seem to bother anyone I've spoken to.
My wife installed 2003 on her laptop last weekend, but I haven't seen it
yet. I've heard a few comments that suggest it's a real improvement on
2002. Is that so? Anyone?
