Sonja,
Someone has been applying direct formatting with Keep
Track of Formatting turned on.

Right mouse click the style you don't want then select
"select all instances" or something like that. Then with
these selected click the style that you want them to be.

For most styles (except the default ones) if a style is
not being used it drops off the list.
