Resolved.

Although it appeared to be fine, the Normal.dot template
file was actually corrupted by the Word crash.

Deleting that file (in C:\Documents and Settings\
"myusername"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates) after
closing Word enabled Word to create a new and "clean"
normal template and the application started fine.

Normally, this is the first thing to try but, as they
quote Bob Buckland at <http://word.mvps.org/> "Word
rarely misses an opportunity to perplex".
