Thanks, Stuart and James, for your suggestions. The Shorter Oxford is
certainly a good authority and the commentary you quote (James) pretty
much confirms my own hunches about where the difference lies. (But does
the Shorter O also endorse your spelling 'favorite', ahead of
'favourite'?? Sorry, couldn't resist that observation ...)
'Within reason' is a good example of a standard phrase that would be
ruined by my pen's reflex action - I didn't think of that one. Maybe the
idea of a boundary is present, at least implicitly, when we use that
phrase. (However, 'apply within' is an example of the adverbial use that
I meant to rule out of court.)
Just received Bede's response too. Seems we're all pretty much agreed on
this one. No-one wants me to preserve 'abbreviations within this
document'.
Let's keep those red pens working!
Howard

In some cases 'in' obviously doesn't work as a replacement (Apply
within; Within reason).
In other cases, in and within chage the meaning or the emphasis of the
sentence. Pick whichever is correct:
- The chemical reaction takes place in the cell walls...
- The chemical reaction takes place within the cell walls...
Where both words seem to work equally well, I would prefer 'in', being
shorter.
Stuart
