atw: Re: What does a technical writer cost?

Well, that's a very open question. Depends on the skills of the =20
person, the needs of the company, whether there's an intermediary, the =20
duration and the location. Hourly rates vary from a low of about $45 =20
to highs of over $100. I've heard of agencies charging up to $120 for =20
ongoing roles (with the writer getting somewhere between $60 and =20
$80/hour--it's best if you can cut out the middle man). In WA, there =20
seems to be a shortage so some positions remain listed for months =20
until the employers raise their rates or lower their standards.

There does appear to be industry differentials. In my experience, with =20
a few exceptions, mining and resources tend to pay better than =20
IT/finance/defence.

Hourly is much more common than daily or weekly.

Cheers,
Terry
