Julie,
Some other questions to ponder, which will have a bearing both on the
kind of consultant you might want and on the ultimate solution:
o How complex is the system being documented (i.e., how big is your
ultimate configuration management problem, and how much will it cost you
to use manual maintenance functions)?
o How large is the organisation (i.e., in terms of budget you can allow
for your solution - assuming that the solution is cost-effective)?
o What in-house skills do your people have (i.e., in terms ability and
availability for implementing open source solutions vs outsourced
packages)?
XML authoring solves one set of problems - and will make component
management easier.
XML content management automates many of the configuration management
possibilities enabled by XML authoring.
Good luck.

| The software is in its infancy and will have a variable set of plugins
| depending on the actual implementation created, we want to have
| documentation that keeps up with the changing environments=20
| that will be
| created. We are only guessing that the answer will lie with=20
| XML since that
| would allow intelligent inclusion of the parts and reusable=20
| parts within
| parts. And extensibility - we're incredibly optimistic as you can see.
|=20
| The software is already heavily into XML because it is=20
| creating metadata so
| everyone will be au fait with it in general.=20
|=20
| I'll start to pursue the idea of finding a consultant.
