If all else fails (as it seems to have done, Craig (H),
First, back up your working documents and templates.
Oh, and did I suggest ...?
In the Tools > Options > Save (tab):
Ensure that the Prompt to save Normal template check box is selected.
(Otherwise you might lose all your changes when you exit Word, if those
styles are embedded in the Normal template.)
It might pay to make sure what styles have crept into the Normal
template and, if it is full of unwanted rubbish or has become corrupted
in some way, close Word and (after either renaming Normal.dot to
normaldot.old or similar, or copying it to another folder) delete the
Normal.DOT that Word looks for and restart Word. This makes
Word generate a clean, new version of that foundation template on
which all your Word documents on your PC are based.
(In Word)
Format > Style...
Style dialog displays.
Select and delete the rogue styles.
Exit the dialog.
Look for and apply the styles that you want to the unstyled paragraphs.
HTH.
Cheers,
Michael

Thanks for your suggestions, on- and off-list.

That's my problem! I was after a quick way to find out which styles to
search for! (I have no problem _replacing_ the styles once I know which o=
nes
they are.)
=20
Steve and Terry suggested using the Tools > Options > View tab to display=
the style names alongside the text in Normal view. Unfortunately I have
about 150 pages to wade through, so I was looking for a more automated wa=
y.

Thanks, that's a reasonably reliable way of finding out which styles are
_really_ in use. Then I can search for each of the unwanted ones, using a=
n
appropriate style to replace those that are actually found. Sounds like a=
good way to go.=20

How so? Can I use it to find instances of unwanted styles, much more quic=
kly
than looking at the style area in Normal view?

This sounds like a possibility. Thanks for the idea.=20

Margaret suggested using FrameMaker to manage the paragraph styles. It le=
ts
you work out which styles are definitely in use. Then you can
find-and-replace or globally update them.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Craig
