I agree with the early sentiment about emails and speech but I just can't
use abbreviations in user manuals or in course notes - and mine are not
stuffy.

Oh Jill. I don't see why not. If it works for you in speech and an email,
it's going to work in a document, too.
Written language was devised as a means of recording
spoken language, after all, and formal doesn't have to mean
stuffy.
