atw: Re: Two comments on the Strunk and White thread

I haven't been able to work out how Ignoratio's discovery of a couple of new-sounding chemical elements (argumentum ad [sic, he probably means 'and'] hominem) results in a principled petition...

Anyway, I think the EoS has served a good purpose in help folk write, regardless of its sub-standard grammar. (I haven't seen anywhere in the EoS where the word grammar even crops up.) My main fear is that it has spawned the language nazis referred to in the article Caz alerted us to.

One of the things the newpaper article author left out is that the folk who get up early and bring us the vegies and signs-of-derision probably have a lot of other skills that most of the rest of us could only dream of. The gene lottery has given us a diverse world.

I would argue, though, that what we expect to see in professionally produced documents, manuals etc should follow the rules a bit more than we do in emails and conversation.

And yes, Geoffrey, a very enjoyable thread.

Ciao,
Terry
