Hi Gary,
Firstly, I don't have Interent access here (oh how I miss it!), so I can't =
provide any details about the below. They should be easy enough to find tho=
ugh.=20
You might like to try the TAFE 'Professional Writing and Editing' course an=
d just enrol in the Editing subject. Actually, from memory, I think there's=
also another editing-related subject (I had to pick one of the two, and ca=
n't remember what the other one was called) that you might also find intere=
sting to do. I did the course at Holemsglen, and I believe it's also run at=
Deakin.=20
Have you tried the CAE? Deborah Doyle used to run courses for the CAE but u=
nfortunately she's moved to Sydney.
There's also the Society of (for?) Editors who should be able to help you.=
=20
Then there's a university in New Zealand (Christchurch Polytechnic?) that h=
as an online Information Architecture (was Technical Communication) course =
(degree?). At least I think it's now called Information Architecture--could=
be Information Design. It might have a subject or two that suits you, thou=
gh I'm not sure if you can do single subjects.
Last but by no means least, you might also like to subscribe to Jean Hollis=
-Weber's newsletter. Jean, can you post the details?
I'd be very interested to know what courses you find out about--especially =
the online ones. Could you post a summary (to me or the list)? Thanks a mil=
lion.
All the best with your career change,
Sonja

Greetings, everyone=20
This is my first post. Congratulations on having such an interesting forum.=
I have an IT and engineering background and am moving into technical writi=
ng via proofreading/editing. To this end, I will initially be doing a proof=
reading/editing course .=20
The Australian College of Journalism (ACJ) runs an online short diploma of =
'Professional Editing & Proofreading' (nominally 6 mths, personal tutor app=
ointed). There are other courses run by various other organisations, often =
1-2 days length. I was surprised that WEA & TAFE no longer seem to run one =
(unless I'm missing something).
As I'm moving into a new career, I am wary of 1-2 day courses (they would n=
eed to have killer course notes to offset the brief contact time). I feel t=
hey might be more appropriate down the track for skills development.
I'd appreciate any feedback on respected (or not respected) courses within =
the industry, e.g. what is the perceived standing of the ACJ? What training=
bodies are most favoured and/or effective?
If you are commenting on the above and are also involved in running courses=
, please make that fact clear as I am not yet familiar with subscribers' ac=
tivities.=20
Thanks
Gary
