As an ex American, I still say HEAR! HEAR! to Bruce's comments below.
However, I am not against international affiliation (which need not be syco=
phantic). Such affiliations can provide very useful support for the nationa=
l organisation.
Based on what I saw at their conference earlier this year, the Kiwi's (http=
://www.tcanz.org.nz/) have done very well out of their association with INT=
ECOM:
http://computerworld.co.nz/webhome.nsf/NL/007BC5BF7447182FCC256D5F0015D69E
http://www.intecom.org/index.htm.
My understanding is that ASTC(Vic) is also associated with INTECOM, althoug=
h given that they only represent a minority of TWers in Australia, they may=
not get so much from the association.
Hopefully, a well organized Australian national organisation of TWers could=
work out associations with both STC and INTECOM to maximise benefits to it=
s members in terms of conferences, professional improvement resources and c=
ontacts.

| I have always found it rather annoying (professionally) that=20
| successive
| committees have not actively sought to bring the ASTCs under the one
| national umbrella.
|=20
| I don't think it would be that difficult to merge or at least=20
| s-t-a-r-t
| t-h-e p-r-o-c-e-s-s by putting in place a theoretical future under a
| national body (benefits etc) and then asking all current=20
| members of both
| ASTCs what they thought.
|=20
| The trouble has always been that a majority of committee=20
| members are not
| willing to fight the good battle because they see it as being=20
| too hard to
| accomplish or because they 'cannot find the time' and because they are
| voluntary, nothing can be done.
|=20
| As for the STC, I was against the Australian chapter being=20
| set up because we
| had never seriously tried to merge the ASTCs and running off=20
| to Uncle Sam
| was, to me, seen as a cop out. Clearly the needs of some were=20
| not being met
| but the solution should be local, not imported, regardless of=20
| how 'local'
| you try to make the imported one look. McDonalds is still=20
| McDonalds even if
| they do buy their buns locally.
