All of which proves the value of audience analysis. The original query
was about usage "in Australia", which is too broad. The same object can
be named differently by different trade or professional groups, or
other categories of people. So who are you writing for? Automotive
electricians? Engineers? Consumers? Nerds? ...
Reminiscence: many years ago, I worked for an American automotive
manufacturer, and everyone referred to the bright things on the cars as
"lamps" (head lamps, tail lamps, indicator lamps,...) and the big
transparent bits as "lights" (never "windows").
