Hi Geoff.
Sorry for not having a magic bullet to ease your pain (or to put you out of
your misery :)) but here is a link that may be of assistance.

Good luck.

Austechies,
Let me try to explain the problem one more time. Perhaps I'm just use to
Framemaker and expect Word to be able to do the same things.
In Framemaker, if I import a graphic by reference, and subsequently need to
change the graphic, I can do so in the appropriate graphics package and as
soon as the modified graphic is saved, the graphic in the Framemaker file
AUTOMATICALLY updates. That is, it shows the new graphic. I don't have to do
a close-and-open, or fart about selecting it and pressing some damn function
key.
Now supposedly Word can do the same thing, because on the Links dialog (get
there from the Edit menu), there are two radio buttons in one set of radio
buttons. These buttons are labelled Automatic update and Manual update.
Presumably we are to interpret the first option literally: it automatically
updates, that is, it shouldn't require user intervention to update linked
graphics (or even linked text, for that matter).
Now, in any set of radio buttons, one should be selected by default. That's
just the behaviour of radio buttons UNLESS some preference or other is
preventing that set from being enabled. In my copy of Word 2003, both the
abovementioned radio buttons are disabled. Why is it so? And how (if
possible) can I enable these buttons so that I can turn on automatic
updating.
Is that any clearer?
Cheers
