atw: Re: This linking problem: one more time

Dear Geoff (M)

First, maybe I went a bit over the top earlier,
for which I humbly apologize.

Now that I have seen the Word
2003 Edit > Links dialog, I can see how the Update method for selected
link pane radio buttons being greyed out could make one go spare.

It really is silly that, as others have mentioned, it only works on
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) objects and not on any of the other
links in a file.  Indeed, how such a poorly labeled / ill
conceived "feature" can cause so much frustration has long been
a Microsloth specialty.  They must employ some real programming
sadists.  Ouch!

In trying to actually help you, once I had
Web access this morning, I checked out their knowledge base and found the
related topic: "You cannot update a linked image when you click
Update Now in Word 2003" at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825773/en-us

What is interesting there is how the quite deeply embedded (read
"hidden") Update links on save options (General tab, Web Options
> Files tab) can also have an impact.

Glad Rhonda (B) and
Wazza (L) found it was all about OLE links.

"That's
another fine mess Word has gotten us into, OLE."

Cheers,

Micky G.
