atw: Re: The latest spam virus attack

Steve's comments are interesting. Is this an attack specifically focussed o=
n .com addresses? or spam list addresses?

I have received several hundred attacks per day since Friday (that do not s=
eem to be diminishing). Once the virus filters were updated most attacks we=
re stopped at the email server (but I still get notification messages). How=
ever, I have received not one at home an account on a .net provider (either=
 my provider - http://hotkey.net.au - has a very good anti virus filter - o=
r none have been sent there) or at my monash.edu.au address (they have been=
reasonably permeable to viruses in the past). The home e-mail has not been=
published in my email signatures to forums, but both my .com and .edu acco=
unt addresses have been so published.

Does anyone else have similar observations?

So, OptusNet is completely inundated with incoming spam. I'm getting between
300 and 500 "Install me from MS" spams. 155kb each. So as the weekend goes
on the QoS keeps dropping and dropping, now logging onto the webmail
interface is almost impossible.

Of course, I write to them, and their first suggestion is to use rules.
<Laughs> I run spamnet - a much more powerful peer-to-peer anti-spam
network. It deals with most of them - AFTER they have spent hours clogging
my incoming mail stream. Of course, to keep up I have to leave my computer
on, which is totally against OptusNets new draconian usage policy - all done
to improve QoS of course.

So I pointed this out, and they say they are looking into it. Then I point
out the problem has grown to where the webmail server is jammed. They say
they are experiencing technical difficulties and are working on it.

My reply:

<TRANSLATED>

Although we have progressively cut our customer's access to basic ISP
services, because of our own lack of attention and duty of care we have
rendered our network unusable for you. If we put in some simple filters
right now we would be able to return QoS to its expected levels but we wont
because we are able to charge you for more bandwidth to download your SPAM
with.

Please keep depositing your hard-earned dollars every month with us as we
try and find new ways to reduce your access rights.

Yes, I'm completely and utterly over this country's hangman's attitude to
bandwidth. What's the damn number for the telecoms ombudsman? I want some
SERVICE - the S in ISP.
